What We Are Doing Now
It is my personal conviction, and I believe it to be the Biblical model, that the parents are the ones who are primarily responsible for the discipleship of their children, not the Sunday School teacher or Youth Pastor. So, three weeks ago, or so, I started going through the Baptist Catechism (from DesiringGod.org ) with 6-year-old son and 4-year-old daughter, which has been interesting to say the least. So far we have been doing nothing more than rote memorization of the question and the answer.
Question 1: Who is the first and best of beings?
Answer: God is the first and best of beings.
Scripture: Isaiah 44:6; Psalm 8:1; 96:4; 97:9, 1 Samuel 2:2.
Question 2: What is the chief end of man?
Answer: Man's chief end is to glorify God and to enjoy him forever.
Scripture: 1 Corinthians 10:31; Psalm 16:11; 37:4; 73:25-26; Isaiah43:7.
Question 3: How do we know there is a God?
Answer: The light of nature in man, and the works of God, plainly declares that there is a God; but his word and Spirit only, do effectually reveal him unto us for our salvation.
Scripture: Romans 1:18-20; Psalm 19:1-2; 2 Timothy 3:15; 1 Corinthians 1:21-24; 2:9, 10; Matthew 11:27.
This week we have also added the element of Scripture memorization. For this we are using Fighter Verses (available from Bethlehem Baptist Church). This weeks memory verse is:
Know therefore that the LORD your God is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant with those who love Him and keep His commandments, to a thousand generations,
Deuteronomy 7:9 (ESV)
My six year plan is as follows:
| Reading Luther at one year old... | |
| Reading systematic theologies at four years old... | |
| And preaching by the time they are six years old! |
